Jennifer SchumakerVISION

Walk for Togetherness seeks to promote togetherness by drawing attention to the shared humanity of all persons; specifically, to honor human diversity, including expressions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), heterosexual and all identities. Walk for Togetherness seeks to widen this vision to reach other individuals and groups experiencing societal disenfranchisement in America.

MISSION

I. Via the 2006 “One Mom, Two Feet, 500 Miles: A Walk for Togetherness,” Walk for Togetherness seeks to increase the visibility of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) and draw attention to the interconnections among people who are LGBT and their families, friends, and allies.

II. Through display and sharing of the rainbow “togetherness ribbon,” the Walk seeks to promote a highly visible, accessible, and shared symbol for families, friends, and allies of people who are LGBT to show their support, as well as a symbol for LGBT people themselves to acknowledge self, loved ones, and allies.

Togetherness Ribbon

III. Through the 2006 event and continued walks, events, and donations, Walk for Togetherness seeks to utilize the “togetherness impact” to:

  1. Raise awareness among the public about issues such as marriage equality and social and economic equality for families headed by or including members of the LGBT community, by partnering with groups such as Equality California and Marriage Equality USA.
  2. Reach our LGBT and questioning youth and their allies by partnering with existing groups, such as the Gay/Lesbian/Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to establish and mentor LGBT/Straight alliances in America's Schools.
  3. Reach our LGBT youth in crisis, by partnering with groups such as The Trevor Project, to help prevent teen suicide and offer support to LGBT and questioning youth.
  4. Promote togetherness among the general population and any other groups experiencing disenfranchisement, by partnering with faith communities such as the Unitarian Universalists and forming alliances and holding events that create dialogue, increase understanding among people, and widen the symbolism of the togetherness ribbon.
